Ubud or Canggu — choosing where to stay in Bali

Ubud or Canggu — choosing where to stay in Bali

Bali is not one place. The island people picture — rice terraces, temples, mist in the palms — and the one they actually book — beach clubs, surf, long lunches — are often an hour's drive apart. Where you base yourself shapes the entire trip.

Canggu is Bali in motion. Black-sand beaches and dependable surf breaks give the mornings their rhythm; the evenings belong to beach clubs, natural-wine bars and the kind of farm-to-table cooking that has quietly made the area a destination in itself. It suits travellers who want the sea close and the days full.

Ubud is the counterweight. Set inland among river valleys and working rice fields, it moves at the pace of the light — galleries, temples, long walks and slow food. It rewards the guests who came to genuinely rest, and to feel somewhere very far from home.

Our own collection sits across both. The Onnea villas, Ocean Palm and Oza Villa hold the Canggu coast; Sumeru Botanical Estate gives you the green quiet of Ubud. Families and larger groups often split the week between the two — a few nights of surf, a few nights of stillness.

If you are unsure, tell us how you like to spend a day and we will point you to the right base. Getting this one decision right is most of what makes a Bali trip feel like the one you imagined.
